- He grew up believing that his father was John Frederick Barrett (Desmond Child’s mother’s husband at the time of his birth) and only came to know that his biological father was a Hungarian man named Joseph Marfy when Child was 18 years old.
- In January 1991, he lost his younger brother to AIDS-related complications. Desmond Child recorded the song A Ray of Hope written by Don Paul Yowell as a tribute to his late brother.
