- A few months after his birth, his parents returned to their home in the United States while Sumanth remained in India at the request of his grandfather Akkineni Nageswara Rao who wanted to raise his first grandchild as his busy acting career had earlier prevented him from fully experiencing fatherhood with his own children. Sumanth was subsequently adopted by his maternal grandparents.
- Yarlagadda Sumanth Kumar made his first film appearance as Suri in the 1999 Telugu-language romance drama film Prema Katha, directed by Ram Gopal Varma.
- Opposite Swati Reddy, he co-starred as Sampath in the 2011 Telugu-language sports drama film Golconda High School.
