Francisco Cerúndolo Facts
- Francisco started playing tennis when he was just about 5 years old – under the guidance of his parents who run a tennis academy.
- He first came into the spotlight in early March 2021 when he finished as the runner-up at the Argentina Open (an ATP Tour 250 event) – as a qualifier. It was his first appearance in the final of an ATP Tour-level tournament.
- Francisco was also the first qualifier to have reached this tournament’s final since 2001. Just a week ago, in late February 2021, his younger brother, Juan Manuel, won his first ATP Tour-level singles title at the Córdoba Open (another ATP Tour 250 event).
- This meant that the Cerúndolos became the first pair of brothers to have reached the finals of consecutive tournaments on the ATP Tour since 2017. That year, Alexander Zverev won the Italian Open (an ATP Masters 1000 (an annual series of 9 prestigious tournaments featuring the top-ranked players on the ATP Tour) event) on May 21 and Mischa Zverev finished as the runner-up at the Geneva Open (an ATP Tour 250 event) on May 27.
- After reaching the quarter-final stage of the 2022 Argentina Open, Francisco broke into the ‘Top 100’ of the official ATP singles rankings. This made him and his younger brother, Juan Manuel, the first pair of brothers to have simultaneously been a part of the ‘Top 100’ of the official ATP singles rankings since the aforementioned Zverev brothers – who had achieved this feat in May 2019.
- In late March 2022, at the Miami Open, his first appearance in the main draw of an ATP Masters 1000 event, he upset 16th seed Reilly Opelka in the 2nd round, 22nd seed Gaël Monfils in the 3rd round, and 28th seed Frances Tiafoe in the 4th round. In the next stage of the tournament (quarter-final), 9th seed Jannik Sinner retired during the match due to foot blisters. This meant that Francisco had reached the semi-final stage of an ATP Masters 1000 event for the first time in his career.
- Ranked world number 103 at that time, he became the lowest-ranked semi-finalist at the Miami Open since 1985. He also became the first player since 2012 to have reached the semi-final stage on his main draw debut at an ATP Masters 1000 event. Although he lost the semi-final match to 6th seed Casper Ruud in straight sets, he achieved a new career-high singles ranking – world number 51.
- In July 2022, in the 2nd round of the Swedish Open (an ATP Tour 250 event), Francisco stunned top seed, defending champion, and then world number 5 Casper Ruud in 3 sets. This was the first win of his career over a player ranked in the ‘Top 10’ of the official ATP singles rankings. He went on to win this tournament – his first singles title on the ATP Tour. Consequently, he broke into the ‘Top 30’ of the official ATP singles rankings.
- At the 2023 French Open, he produced his then-best singles performance at a Grand Slam tournament (Australian Open/French Open/Wimbledon Championship/US Open) by reaching the 4th round. He had defeated 9th seed and then world number 8 Taylor Fritz in the 3rd round of the tournament.
- This was Francisco’s 4th win over a player ranked in the ‘Top 10’ of the official ATP singles rankings in the 2023 season and his 6th such win overall. Although he lost his 4th round match of the 2023 French Open to 6th seed Holger Rune in 5 sets, his performance in the tournament saw him break into the ‘Top 20’ of the official ATP singles rankings for the first time in his career.
- He won the Eastbourne International (an ATP Tour 250 event) in June 2023 – his second singles title on the ATP Tour. This made Francisco just the 3rd Argentine champion in a grass-court tournament on the ATP Tour and the first since 1995.
