- In 2012, he made his first film appearance by playing the role of Bomman (a Mahout) in the Tamil-language musical adventure romantic drama film Kumki. His co-stars included Lakshmi Menon, Thambi Ramaiah, and Ashvin Raja. Talking about Vikram’s role in the film, a critic said that Vikram Prabhu excels in the “intensely emotional scenes in the climax”, while “he is also at ease portraying angst, gratitude and rage”.
- For his performance in Kumki, Vikram Prabhu won the South Indian International Movie Award (SIIMA) for “Best Male Debutant – Tamil”, Vijay Award for “Best Debut Actor”, and Tamil Nadu State Film Award for “Special Prize (Best Actor)”.
