Tomás Martín Etcheverry Facts

  1. Tomás started playing tennis when he was about 5 years old. This was after his parents gave him a ‘palo con pelota’ (paddle ball with string) during a family vacation. He used to play with it for hours and soon asked his parents to enroll him in tennis lessons.
  2. He first came into the spotlight in March 2023 when he reached the final of the Chile Open – an ATP Tour 250 (the lowest tier of tournaments on the ATP Tour) event. In the tournament’s first round, he defeated 2015 Australian Open doubles champion Fabio Fognini. He then upset 2nd seed Francisco Cerúndolo to reach the quarter-final stage.
  3. He eventually reached the tournament’s semi-final where he defeated 3rd seed Sebastián Báez. This meant that Tomás had made it to his career’s first-ever final of a tournament on the ATP Tour (a worldwide top-tier tennis tour organized by the ATP). He lost the final in 3 sets to local favorite Nicolás Jarry.
  4. In April 2023, he reached the final of the U.S. Men’s Clay Court Championships – another ATP Tour 250 event. During the tournament, he had to play 4 matches in 2 days due to a convoluted schedule that was caused by frequent rain interruptions. Due to his performance in this tournament, Tomás broke into the ‘Top 60’ of the official ATP singles rankings.
  5. His best performance at a Grand Slam (Australian Open/French Open/Wimbledon Championships/US Open) tournament, as of January 2024, was reaching the quarter-final of the 2023 French Open. Previously, he had never made it past the 2nd round of a Grand Slam tournament.
  6. During the 2023 French Open, Tomás upset 18th seed Alex de Minaur in the 2nd round, 15th seed Borna Ćorić in the 3rd round, and 27th seed Yoshihito Nishioka in the 4th round (pre-quarterfinal). Amazingly, he did not drop a set in any of these matches.
  7. He eventually fell to 22nd seed Alexander Zverev in 4 sets in the quarter-final stage. Due to his performance in this tournament, he reached a new career-high singles world ranking – number 32.
  8. At the 2024 Australian Open, Tomás defeated the former world number 1 and 3-time Grand Slam champion Andy Murray in straight sets in the first round. In the 2nd round, he overcame former world number 6 Gaël Monfils in straight sets. He bowed out of the tournament in the 3rd round after a straight sets defeat to top seed and then world number 1 Novak Djokovic.
  9. He has a pet dog named Roland Garros. Eugène Adrien Roland Georges Garros was a French aviation pioneer and fighter pilot in whose memory the Stade Roland Garros (a complex of tennis courts, including stadiums, located in Paris) was built in 1928. The French Open tennis tournament, also known as Roland-Garros, is held in this stadium.
